The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) will promote National Air Quality Awareness Week, May 4 through May 8, 2026. In partnership with the U.S. EPA and Air Now, MVRPC will share information about MVRPC’s Air Quality Awareness Program for the Miami Valley Region. Each Day, MVRPC will share posts on social media with information to learn more about Air Quality Awareness Week. This annual observance provides an opportunity to educate residents about how to find information about the air quality in their community and what actions you can take to improve it.
“Air quality plays a crucial role in the health of residents across the Miami Valley Region. Poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and exacerbate existing health conditions,” stated Brian O. Martin, Executive Director of MVRPC, “It is important for everyone to take steps to help reduce air pollution in our Region.”
MVRPC encourages residents to take actions to reduce air pollution:
- Taking the bus –– Greater Dayton RTA (Montgomery County), Greene CATS Public Transit (Greene County), and Miami County Public Transit can help you plan your route.
- Using alternative transportation modes such as biking, walking, or carpooling. Visit GohioCommute.com for resources to help you plan these options.
- Drive an electric vehicle or use battery-powered yard equipment.
- Avoid letting your car idle while waiting.
In our Region, on days when air pollution levels are forecasted to be high, MVRPC, in conjunction with Regional Air Pollution Control Agency (RAPCA), will issue an Air Quality Alert (AQA). RAPCA is responsible for monitoring and reporting air quality readings in Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Darke, Preble, Shelby and Clark Counties. Poor air quality affects everyone; however, some individuals are susceptible to air pollutants, including children and adults who are active outdoors, older adults, and those with chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma.
