Through the analysis of regional crash data, MVRPC identified trends and developed a targeted safety awareness campaign focused on reducing crashes and injuries. The campaign messages are advertised on a variety of media outlets to reach a broad audience of motorists as well as cyclists and pedestrians to help them navigate area roadways safely together. Campaign messages to motorists, encourage seatbelt use and discourage speeding and distracted driving by highlighting crash statistics that reinforce the importance of safe driving habits. For cyclists and pedestrians, a reminder to wear brightly colored and reflective clothing to increase their visibility to motorists. These safety behaviors can contribute to safer roadways for all. 15% of unrestrained crashes lead to fatalities or serious injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 80% of vehicle occupants who were fully ejected from a vehicle involved in a crash were killed. Seat belt use across Ohio is at its lowest in five years. The use of seat belts and proper child restraint is a simple action to take to keep you and your family safe.
Be Safe! Drive the posted speed limit. Speed endangers everyone on the road. Speeding is a factor in 33% of all fatal crashes in the Miami Valley.
Speed related crashes occur when a driver goes over the speed limit or too fast for environmental conditions. Older adults, ages 66 and above, were most likely to be involved in a severe speed related crash. Forty-three percent (43%) of severe speed related crashes involving older adults led to a fatality or injury; 33% of speed related crashes were fixed object crashes followed by sideswipe-passing crashes (22%) and rear end crashes (15%).

From 2021 to 2023, 2,047 crashes involving a distracted driver occurred. These included internal distractions, external distractions, phones, and other electronic devices. Young drivers, ages 16 to 25, were most frequently involved in distracted driving.

Bicycle crashes in the Miami Valley accounted for around 1% of all traffic crashes, but were mostly severe. Up to 96% of pedestrian crashes and 85% of bicycle crashes resulted in an injury. By always wearing a bike helmet, using proper hand signals, and wearing brightly colored and reflective clothing, cyclists can help reduce crashes and fatalities. Motorists need to pay close attention for cyclists and likewise, cyclists need to make themselves more visible to motorists.
