Join with your colleagues and peers from across the region for the MVRPC Regional Active Transportation Committee. The meeting will be held online to accommodate out-of-town speakers. Join us virtually on Thursday, October 23, 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.

We have seen an increase in comments and concerns raised by users of the Miami Valley Trails website about high-speed e-bikes on the trails. Current rules allow Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes on the Miami Valley Trails and prohibit Class 3 e-bikes. Some of the concerns may be about the behavior of trail users riding completely legal e-bikes in an unsafe or discourteous manner.

But there are also newer e-bikes coming on the market that exceed the performance specs of Class 3 bikes. Sometimes called “Class 4” or “Unrestricted” e-bikes, some of these vehicles even have an app for your phone that switch them from Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 specs or beyond. Take a look at this short video about e-bike classes. These vehicles may exist in a legal gray area in Ohio.

At the October 23, 2025 Regional Active Transportation Committee meeting we will hear from a panel to enlighten us on these issues.

• Matt Herrin from Trek Bicycles Dayton Kettering will brief us on the latest technology in e-bikes and electric vehicles that exceed e-bike specs
• Attorney Steve Magas on how these vehicles do or don’t fit under current Ohio Law
• A review of a legislative approach adopted in Connecticut to update e-bike law to keep up with these new vehicles.
