The Benefits of Driving Electric Vehicles (EV)
- Fueling cost and convenience: Enjoy the convenience of charging at home, at work, or at your travel destination. Spend less to fuel your vehicle because electricity is typically 60 percent less expensive than gas or diesel. Electricity costs are regulated, so electricity costs are stable and predictable. On average, fueling an EV costs about half the cost of fueling a comparable gasoline-powered car.
- Electric cars perform better: EVs are fundamentally superior to gasoline- and diesel-powered combustion vehicles in terms of power, torque, and acceleration, which in turn makes them great fun to drive. On the whole they handle better too due to their low center of gravity, with their heavy batteries mounted in the chassis.
- Lower maintenance costs: Less wear on brakes, no need for oil changes, and far fewer moving parts means much less time in the shop and much less expense maintaining an EV. Since EVs don’t have an engine, some models use this extra space as a front trunk or frunk.
- Cleaner, quieter transportation: EVs do not waste energy making heat or friction and so more of your fuel is used to move down the road. EVs do not have tailpipe emissions which reduces pollution in your community. EVs produce far less noise pollution for a calmer, more relaxing drive.
Electric Vehicle Charging Station Availability
- Charging sites available to the public have been steadily increasing in the Miami Valley.
- The Ohio Department of Transportation and private operators are building out a statewide system of high-speed charging stations along all of Ohio’s interstate highways.
- MVRPC recently completed installation of two dozen level two charging stations available throughout the Miami Valley on the Blink network of charging stations.
- Charging stations are simple to find through an EV’s onboard navigation and a variety of online tools and apps.
Electric Bikes (E-bikes)
- Pedal assist electric bikes (e-bikes) remove the barriers to cycling such as hills, headwinds, and physical limits. E-bikes enable older cyclists to keep riding, even when past their peak fitness level.
- E-bikes can reduce the travel time of your bike commute, help you bypass traffic congestion, and can be easier to park.
- Replacing short trips with an e-bike saves on gas, parking, and reduces air pollution and vehicle maintenance costs.
- You can choose your level of exertion. This means with many levels of assistance, you can choose to ride to work or run errands to arrive less sweaty or tired.
