MVRPC works across the region to support community projects and initiatives that protect our natural resources and prepare for the future, rooted in a shared vision of a healthier, more sustainable, more resilient, and more economically competitive region.
Water Quality
MVRPC’s Water Quality Management program focuses on protecting the Miami Valley’s groundwater and surface water systems. The Miami Valley Region is home to water resources like the Great Miami River and the Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer, which supply drinking water and support ecosystems, recreation, and economic activity. Through the Areawide Water Quality Management Plan (AWQMP), MVRPC coordinates regional wastewater planning, watershed management, and groundwater protection efforts across the five-county planning area.
Air Quality
MVRPC’s Air Quality Planning efforts, as required by the Clean Air Act, incorporate air quality issues into planning through several programs and initiatives. MVRPC’s Air Quality Awareness Program is a public education initiative that supports cleaner air in the region by educating the public about actions they can take to reduce air pollution. MiamiValleyAir.org provides you with basic air quality and air pollution information for Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Clark, Darke, Shelby, and Preble Counties in Ohio.
Sustainability
Sustainability is an underlying theme of the work at the agency to preserve the environment and support the region. Examples include promoting clean energy transitions, encouraging active transportation in communities and protecting clean water and air. The Miami Valley Sustainable Tool Kit was developed as a guide of resources to support local governments' efforts to suggest policies, codes, ordinances, programs, and projects to support sustainability.
Climate Pollution Reduction
MVRPC’s Climate Pollution Reduction Planning initiative represents a regional effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the Miami Valley for a clean energy future. Supported through a U.S. EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant, the program includes greenhouse gas inventories, emissions reduction targets, public engagement, and implementation strategies.
Regional Resiliency
Regional Resiliency Planning focuses on preparing for, how to withstand, and recover from natural disasters, extreme weather related events, and protect against economic shocks and stressors. Building on lessons learned from the 2019 Memorial Day tornado recovery, MVRPC developed a regional resiliency framework that emphasizes preparedness, collaboration, and adaptive planning. Planning for resiliency includes the economic health of the Region. The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) was created in partnership with the Dayton Development Coalition to strengthen, diversify and build resiliency for our regional economy.
