Water Quality GIS Internship Opportunity
The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) has one full time (30-35 hours per week) Water Quality Geographical Information System (GIS) Internship on the Strategy & Engagement, Transit and Sustainability Team (SETS) available at the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission office during the period of October 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.
The Water Quality GIS Internship on the Strategy & Engagement, Transit and Sustainability Team (SETS) will provide basic level GIS editing and computational analysis experience in three project areas:
- Developing data layers to enable use of the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework including agricultural field boundaries and NASS Cropland Data. This work will include digitization from aerial photography and work with Land Cover datasets.
- Developing GIS data sets and layers to support work by watershed groups or land trusts to complete Non-Point Source Implementation Plans (9 Element Plans).
- Designing and creating GIS geodatabase(s) to assist a public health district with existing home sewage treatment system (HSTS) data, transferring into a geographically referenced data set. The completed dataset to be provided to Ohio EPA and the participating health.
Applicants should be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in planning, geography or a related field; possess knowledge of planning principles and practices with a working knowledge of GIS; familiarity with research techniques; and demonstrated skills in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet and database software. Basic understanding of ArcGIS through completion of introductory GIS courses is required for this position.
