Transportation Equity Act
for the 21st Century (TEA-21)
The
Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century was enacted June 9, 1998
as Public Law 105-178. TEA-21 authorizes the Federal surface transportation
programs for highways, highway safety, and transit for the 6-year period
1998-2003. TEA-21 builds on the initiatives established in the Intermodal
Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), which was the last
major authorizing legislation for surface transportation. This new Act
combines the continuation and improvement of current programs with new
initiatives to meet the challenges of improving safety as traffic continues
to increase at record levels, protecting and enhancing communities and
the natural environment as we provide transportation, and advancing America's
economic growth and competitiveness domestically and internationally through
efficient and flexible transportation. For more information
please visit the TEA-21
web site.
In 2003 Congress began debating reauthorization of TEA-21, which may present an opportunity to implement transportation reforms in the Region. The Brookings Institute offers studies relating to the pending reauthorization of TEA-21 and a look at how Ohio distributes gas tax dollars.
The Federal debate has been ongoing, with many versions in congressional committees. Several predictions have reauthorization occurring in May 2005. For more information on the reauthorization process, see the USDOT TEA-21 reauthorization page.
Since 1999 MVRPC has been soliciting for STP, CMAQ and TE Projects. Available below are approved project lists for each funding source as well as an overall listing of all approved TEA-21 projects since 1999.
