Scenario Building Workshops

Between October 2009 and June 2010, MVRPC held 32 workshops (17 community and 15 focus group workshops) to gather information from people who live and work in the Miami Valley Region on how they would like to see the Region develop in the future. A total of 645 people attended the workshops, with 609 participating in the interactive exercises designed to engage regional stakeholders in the land use scenario building process.

The 90-minute workshop was consisted of two parts (View workshop agenda). First, presentation was given to provide an overview of the Going Places initiative and to share the findings from the Phase I - Existing Condition Assessment. The second part of the workshop was to engage the participants in the scenario building process using two interactive exercises centered on several land use themes:

• Business as Usual Development
• Infill/Conservation Development
• Asset-Based Development
• Radial Corridor Development
• Unrestricted Development

Participants were first asked to either select one of the above five pre-determined land use themes or to create a theme of their own. Participants were then asked to join a Scenario Station of their selected theme and participate in two exercises, a dot mapping and a mind mapping exercises, and address the question of:

Given the projected need for future population and job growth, in what parts and in what ways should we develop in the future?

The inputs from both of these exercises will be used in refining each of the land use themes and their associated land use scenarios. MVRPC plans to report back and share the final sets of land use themes and scenarios to the region this fall.
