Geographic Information Systems

MVRPC has been using GIS since the late 1980s to manage, analyze and visualize various geospatial information of the Miami Valley Region.

At MVRPC, GIS is one of the key components of its Planning Support System that provides a vital operating function in conducting regional planning activities. Examples of GIS activities include geospatial database construction and management, technical spatial data analysis, and map generation to facilitate a better decision making process. Further, MVRPC’s GIS program provides a leadership role in the Region by coordinating and implementing various GIS activities to share data, information, knowledge, and technical expertise with local governments and the general public.

In 2006, MVRPC updated its GIS capacity with the latest Enterprise GIS technologies and developed an integrated and centralized system of GIS components in order to perform and coordinate planning activities at the regional level more efficiently and effectively

What's New

MVRPC showcases several map displays at the MVRPC Offices, on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, in recognition of International GIS Day .

In September 2008, MVRPC received two (2) awards in the Map Gallery Competition during the 2008 Ohio Geographic Information Systems ( GIS ) Conference. The Miami Valley Land Suitability Assessment map received the “First Place Award” in the Analytical Map Category. Also, it received the “Best of Show Award” which was presented to the entry that received the highest overall score among all entries for all categories.

MVRPC staff was invited to participate in the National Association of Regional Councils 2007 Executive Directors' Conference in Dayton in October 2007. As part of a session on GIS On-line Special Presentation Session, MVRPC presented information about the MVRPC GIS Online Planning Support System (Adobe Acrobat Reader:2.32 MB).

In September 2007, MVRPC received the "2007 Best Practices Award" from the Ohio Geographically Referenced Information Program (OGRIP) for its efforts to facilitate better decision-making, to better share planning-related information, and to expand public participation at the regional level through the use of GIS.

In August 2007, MVRPC updated its GIS Online Planning Support System (GIS OPSS), an interactive Planning Atlas mapping application, to share varous geospatial datasets. Datasets currently available via GIS OPSS include

  • Boundaries (Political Boundary),
  • Census (Block, Block Group, Tract, and Urban Boundary),
  • Environment (FPA, State HUC, Rivers and Streams, and Waterbodies),
  • Land Fabric (Open Space, 2000 Existing Land Cover, Zoning, and Adopted Land Use Plan) and
  • Transportation (Bikeway, Road, TAZ, andTransportation Urban Boundary).
