2010 Annual Spring Dinner

Dayton, OH – Exuding professionalism, thoughtful insight and a thorough understanding of the intricacies of local government, while at the same time, encouraging stakeholders to move forward on a regional level, were just a few of the reasons why Montgomery County Commissioner, Dan Foley, was chosen to be the recipient of the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission’s (MVRPC) Regional Steward Award. Mr. Foley received the award on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at MVRPC’s Annual Spring Dinner held at the NCR Country Club.

MVRPC Chairperson and Mayor of Kettering, Don Patterson, and MVRPC’s Executive Director, Donald R. Spang, presided over the event, which was attended by 200 guests from across the Region.

Mr. Foley was chosen to receive the coveted Regional Steward Award for many reasons including his outstanding commitment to the Region. Chairman Patterson explained, “Dan always demonstrates the true meaning of consensus building. He is known for his unwavering support of regional efforts and he understands the importance of promoting the Miami Valley as a whole which is exactly what the Regional Steward Award recognizes.”

Mr. Foley accomplishments include:

  • Being a strong advocate for regional collaborations including the consolidation of services and the promotion of new models of revenue sharing to promote regional economic development;
  • Being an advocate for Regional Economic Development Strategies in the areas of: aerospace, logistics, distribution, urban core revitalization and the I-75 corridor;
  • Assuming a leadership role in establishing a multi-county comprehensive criminal justice information system designed to improve mission critical data support for all levels of the justice system;
  • Being a strong advocate for improving the quality of life by spearheading efforts to improve the river corridor, the bikeway system, and amateur sporting events;
  • Being an active member of the Ohio Commission on Local Government Reform and Collaboration Committee.

Commissioner Foley also serves on several boards and committees including:

  • County Commission Association of Ohio’s (CCAO) Fiscal, Economic & Infrastructure Committee;
  • CCAO 2010 Jobs, Economic Development Infrastructure Committee and its 2010 Metropolitan and Regional Affairs Committee;
  • The Dayton Art Institute;
  • Dayton Chamber of Commerce;
  • Dayton Foundation Neighborhood School Committee;
  • South Metro Regional Chamber of Commerce Board;
  • State Emergency Response Commission;
  • Dayton Dialogue on Race Relations.

He is currently the President of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, and has served as a Commissioner since 2007. Mr. Foley served on the Board of the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission from 2008 – 2009, always focusing on the larger picture – approaching issues from a regional perspective. Don Spang, MVRPC’s Executive Director, noted that “Dan has done a lot to raise the profile of the Miami Valley Region as a whole. MVRPC’s tagline is One Region…One Vision…One Future and Dan’s commitment to this region certainly demonstrates that motto.”

Since 1964, MVRPC has served as a forum for cooperation – bringing governments, business and other groups together and fostering collaboration to advance the Region’s priorities. The Annual Spring Dinner is a way to express continued thanks to the elected officials who devote countless hours to the betterment and unity of the Region.
